Sport & Performance Psychology Consulting Services

Mental Performance Consulting Services

Drawing on my background as an athlete, coach, and my formal studies in sport and performance psychology, I work with individuals and teams—athletes, performers, and high achievers—to develop and strengthen the mental aspects of their craft. The goal is to help people consistently show up at their best, especially under pressure. Mental performance consulting focuses on building skills and tools that support improved focus, confidence, motivation, stress management, and more. Through a collaborative and personalized approach, we explore a range of research-informed strategies tailored to each person’s unique needs and goals. These may include goal setting, visualization, self-talk, attentional cues, and arousal regulation or optimization.

Moreover, I believe that everyone is worthy of pursuing their best. While “best” may look different for each individual, it’s the process of discovering and striving for it that brings a deep sense of joy, satisfaction, and fulfillment—often in ways that go far beyond results or outcomes.

My consulting style centers on getting to know each person as a human first and a performer second. I believe that taking this approach allows for more meaningful insight into what each person may need to support both their performance and their enjoyment of their chosen pursuits.

If you are interested in seeking individual or group mental performance consulting services, please reach out via the contact tab HERE. Introductory one-on-one meetings are free of charge as I believe it is important to know if we are a good fit for one another. Meetings can be conducted online via Zoom or in-person in Boulder, Colorado.

Background of Interest in Sport & Performance Psychology

About ten years ago, I was volunteering with a youth triathlon club and one of the athletes asked me what I considered my strength to be, presumably choosing either swim, bike, or run. When I responded with “my mind,” it seemed to come as a bit of a shock to the young athletes. I suppose in some ways I simply wanted the younger athletes to expand their understanding of what it takes to perform at a high level, but I also think it spoke to the central importance I had long placed on trying to develop psychological skills that could help me perform at the upper ranges of my abilities when it mattered most.

In the more than 25 years I have been involved in sport as an athlete, and as a coach, I frequently heard athletes, coaches, trainers, etc. speak about the importance of an athlete’s mentality and its effect on performance, but the conversations often describe the strength (or lack thereof) of an athlete’s mind as something that is more innate rather than trainable. In other words, someone either had “it” or they didn't. Fortunately, the conversation is now changing as more athletes and coaches have embraced the concept that the mental aspect of performance consists of skills that can be developed and trained alongside all the physical demands of one’s sport.

In the hopes of improving my own understanding of mental performance, I recently went back to school and completed a Masters in Sport & Performance Psychology with an Applied Concentration at the University of Western States (completed March 2025). I am currently in the process of working towards becoming a Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology. If you want to read more about CMPC certification, you can find it here.

Triathlon Coaching Services

Triathlon & Endurance Sports Coaching Overiew

I have now been coaching, in one capacity or another, for over two decades. My first athlete was me. I started triathlon from scratch in the summer of 2000 with essentially zero knowledge about training, conditioning, racing, etc. I didn’t even know that I didn’t know anything. Fortunately a lot of time has passed since then and my passion for learning about the aforementioned topic has never waned. There probably have been very few days in the last 20+ years where I haven’t been trying to seek out more knowledge whether through my own training, reading, listening, chatting, etc.

I do not always think that athletic experience is a good proxy for successful coaching, but I do believe my own journey in sport has given me a broad range of varied experiences. Granted, my athletic pursuits were generally in the scope of Ironman distance racing, but along those lines I know what it’s like to want to just finish an Ironman (first Ironman in 2001 was 12:55 and 1034th place), improve your time in an Ironman, win your age group in an Ironman, try to get top 10 in an Ironman, try to get on the podium in an Ironman, and finally to try and win an Ironman (IM victory in 2014). The primary advantage to this experience as a coach is the empathy it establishes throughout the various levels of athletic progression.

All that being said, I don’t have any secret sauce and if there is anything I can guarantee you is that there is no shortcut to success in endurance athletics. It takes time and work. I will never try to sugar coat that. What I will try to do is to help that journey be enjoyable, challenging and, hopefully, rewarding. The athletes that have had the most success working with me have also stuck around the longest. When someone enjoys the process, the years of work start to string together and eventually the results are indicative of that.

I say all this because I believe that if you are considering working with me, you should consider if you have long term intentions and goals. There are many great coaches that work on shorter timelines than I do and I would not begrudge you for bouncing off this page after this point for that very reason, but if you are interested in progression in terms of years, and not months, then we might be right for one another.

My coaching rates are $600/month billed upfront quarterly*. I do not offer different tiers of coaching with various levels of services or communications restrictions or guidelines. I simply coach someone or I do not.
